Laney Shaughnessy over at A Simple Design of Ocala posted a YouTube video in September 2013 about designing a flat screen TV wall mount using a very small amount of hardwood and about $5 worth of hardware. Since he doesn’t provide any other content other than the dimensions within the video, I’ve taken the time to draw it up in SketchUp as well as a materials list.
Materials list (assuming you are buying new wood and allowing for scrap):
- Hardwood, 24″ long, 6″ Wide x 3/4″ thick
- 1 – Hex bolt 1/4-20, 6″
- 1 – Hex bolt 1/4-20, 5 1/2″
- 2 – 1/4-20 lock nuts
- 2 – 1/4-20 lock washers
- Aluminum bar-stock 1/8″ x 1/2″, about 8″
- 4 – Machine screws, 3/16 x 1 1/2″ long
- 2 – Nuts, 3/16″
- 2 – Wing nuts, 3/16″
Approximate cost: $20
Remember, you will need to determine the mounting pattern that your specific TV has in order to get the holes spaced properly and detmine the proper mounting screw that goes inside your TV. Typically known as a “VESA mount”, the measurements and hardware are all metric. Wikipedia has a good article covering different sizes out there.
I would like to thank Laney for providing this content
